Babymetal - Megitsune

If you are a metal fan, it’s very likely you’ve heard of Babymetal. But if you’re like me and you missed their introduction by over a decade, here’s your chance now to see what we’ve both missed out on! Babymetal is one of the most fascinating genre blends of metal music with J-Pop vocals.

The three original singers joined the group when they were only about 11 - 12. They didn’t know much about metal at the time, and when trying to do the typical metal handsign, they mistook it for the Kitsune (or fox) sign, which look remarkably similar. But they ran with the mistake, going along great with their fusion of “kawaii” and metal, and the hand sign is now their signature.

Megitsune is one of their older songs, meaning “Female Fox,” and keeping with the theming of their Kitsune hand sign. Though everyone of course may have different interpretations, the song laments that women are seen as deceivers for being charming, or acting like a fox, when they are truly being themselves. It may be in reference to Babymetal themselves, as at the time, they were a controversial group and not fully accepted as true metal artists at the time because of their “kawaii” persona.

Even in the face of criticism, Babymetal stayed true to their aesthetic, and now have a massive cult following all around the world, and still are making great metal music even over a decade later.
