OTYKEN - PSYCHE
Otyken is a group that creates a fascinating blend of traditional and modern music from the Siberian region in Russia. The traditional side of the music comes largely from the style of throat singing often used, and especially the languages featured in most of their songs: Khakas and Chulym. In 2020, it was estimated that there were only 30 Chulym speakers left in the world. Otyken also incorporates traditional instruments, like the jaw harp and komuz.
Though traditional Siberian elements are used in their songs, it should be noted that they aren’t exact representations of the culture. Much of the music is modernized to make it more globally appealing. But the blend makes their songs incredibly unique, and I’ve never heard anything like them.
Psyche is a fun, energetic ride that also features throat singing. It feels chaotic, but in the best way possible. The fusion of traditional and modern is on full display here, and some moments may hit harder than others throughout the song. But there is a fearless experimentation that you can hear throughout the whole song that brings a lot of charm to it.
